The Path of my Music - Solo Acoustic Guitar to Interactive Modular Electronics

My musical work particularly with electronics in recent times is more drone and noise driven where it’s about the texture and sonic experience than it is the beat or melody. I came from a traditional academic trained musician path. In my post-academic 20’s my scope of discovering new musics and inspiration widened. I picked up the guitar from my youth and began what would be a 25 year journey defining it as my voice. The late Michael Hedges was a huge influence on me during this time. As my technique and compositional ear grew I defined myself as an acoustic fingerstyle guitarist under his spell but defining my style through Celtic traditional and eventually my own compositions.

After several self-released recordings and publishing I was fortunate to get in 2001, I began to feel the desire to go beyond the solo guitar path and explore other textures, instruments and electronics and open up to collaboration with other artists. As the pandemic reawakened my interest in silver based light sensitive photography so did it affect my musical process which had begun a shift towards analog two years before when I released a collection of lap steel and computer synth pieces on cassette tape. Last year I started getting interested in analog modular circuits and synthesis. I started a series of outdoor performance/jam-for-one in my neighborhood, local park and on nice evenings, on my apartment building’s roof under the city night sky. I sometimes did these jams with a contact mic’d dulcimer or ukulele interacting live with turning knobs, a process I really enjoyed and as the summer is arriving I’m starting to do again!
